DC and NY Vist

This month started off with a visit to DC and then to NY to see daugher #1 and her hubby. The first stop was DC where hubby had a meeting and I was left to entertain myself.  The visit was very short as we got there Wednesday afternoon and I only had Thursday morning to explore. While hubby was in a dinner meeting, I got to have dinner with one of my favorites... It will probably be my last dinner with this wonderful woman as she will be headed to Baltimore and John Hopkins for a master's degree in Nursing. Thursday was spent wandering around the area.  I did a little bit of shopping and ended up at the Ford Theater.  It was a wonderful museum to visit.  Since there weren't as many tourists this time of year we were able to go and actually look into the box seats that Lincoln and his wife were in.  The tour also included the Peterson house where President Lincoln died. We headed to NY on the bus.  I was a little apprehensive about this, but hubby reser

It's November!!

It's November...can you believe it? November means another UFO! And what does that mean to me? I seem to be in pretty good shape for knitting.  Since I got all of the chemo hats done in August, all of my challenges are done!  I know that the Feb challenge, Cow Soft Cuddle no longer needs to be made. The Baby Bomber Jacket will probably wait until next spring for an 18 month size.  So I guess the question is, do I try to finish up the July and March UFOs?  What to do, what to do?? I did not get the map quilt done for October.  However I did get a new toy last month which I hope will help me get that done much quicker.  This month is the boy/girl charity quilts.  Hmmm... I know I can crank those out pretty quickly if I would just set my mind to it.  As I look at this list, there are quite a few UFOs that I did not get started this year.  Of those, I would really like to get the t-shirt quilts off the list for next year! I've enjoyed this challenge a lo

October Re-cap

There were quite a few things that happend in October that I didn't get a chance to blog about.  So before I move into November, let's do a re-cap of October. I know I have mentioned that one of my favorite blogs is "A Quilting Life".  in one of her posts she had a great tutorial for some zippered pouches made out of mini charm packs.  I ended up making three of these and have great plans for making some for the holidays. These would be great for a pedicure kit, sewing kit, first aid kit, stationary kit... the list goes on and on! We also had our monthly 4-H Spin Sewing meeting.  We had 5 kids there but by the time we were ready for pictures, we only had two of the girls left.  We had them make totes based on this tutorial .  It was another successful project and easy enough for the kids to finish in one session. A baby shower was hosted in October and I tried making my first diaper cake.  The roses were made from small bibs and attached with a

It's almost Halloween

When you daughter tells you on Monday that she'd like to take the grand baby to the zoo for trick or treating but she isn't sure if she can get the costume done... Nana raises her hand up and says "I'll work on it for you!" That was the conversation on Monday afternoon.  She agreed to cut it out while I watched the grand baby. Hubby is gone, so that means lots of sewing time for me when I get home from work.  And I finished it last night! Oh she is going to be so adorable! And she even has a Halloween bag to match!!

It's the little things

There are some things that just make your day...a smile, a diet coke, nice things that someone says to you... Then there are things like this that make you just want to shout for joy and say "you noticed what I made!" It doesn't get any better than this... to be notice by a major fabric company like Moda...WOW!   Thanks #modafabrics for the love, you have no idea how great you just made me feel!

Patchwork Blocks

I have never participated in a block of the month (BOM) before.  But when Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life blog created her 2017 Block of Month, I decided I would participate. I wanted to do a project that would make use of the fabric in my stash.  I had been collecting batiks for the past few years and have been waiting for a pattern to incorporate them.  After the first two blocks were done I was sold! I love how the blocks started out.    And finally this last week I was able to catch up.  I am a little worried as I running out of my background fabric and I can't seem to find anymore of it.  I am hoping I will have enough to finish the last two blocks.  I'll worry about fabric for finishing later.   The block patterns are wonderful as you can use the left over triangle pieces from the flying geese for half triangle pieces in other blocks.    Sherri gave us one extra quilt block that can be used if we want to set the blocks on point.  I can't

Jelly Roll Finish

I am a little behind on my blogging but it's been a busy few weeks.  I watched the "grand" this past weekend.  It left me wondering how I managed to raise four children...but I had so much fun! This face just kills me! And she kept me on her toes! She has stolen her Nana's heart! And now back to our regular program... I did manage to get my Jelly Roll project done and I love how it turned out! I was able to piece the leftover blocks together to create the back for the quilt. I love how this quilt was made from fabric in my stash!! I was also able to use some of the smaller pieced blocks to make a quilt label and holder! I haven't figured out what I am going to do with this quilt.  I'm not ready to give it up so I may just have to find a place to hang it in my sewing room!  I love this project and I love this pattern.  I can't wait to make it again.

Capsule Wardrobe

I have thought about doing a capsule wardrobe for quite awhile.  Now that the season is changing I thought I would see if I can make it work.  I scoured the web and Pinterest for information.  I found this great site that at least helped me find a starting spot.   One of the tips was to chose a base color, black or blue and go from there.  Black was the obvious choice for me. I need to say that I decided to start this project at 9pm at night.  I decided to clean out my closet at 9pm, was I crazy?  Yes, but I forged on... I cleaned out my closet, then I started with pants, skirts, tops etc.  I used the website to help me figure out what I needed.  Long sleeve knits, in three basic colors, grey, white and black.  Same for the short sleeves.  Then I moved to the next thing skirts, three skirts, grey, black and denim.  Next was sweaters, grey, black....are you starting to see a pattern?  I realized as I moved through the list I had a majority of the items already.  Basics in neutral c

October UFO

Another month has started which means it's another UFO.  I could get depressed about what I haven't been able to finish but instead I think I will be thankful for what I have finished!  So with that, what's up for October? What does this mean for me?   Well as far as sewing is concerned that means that my October UFO is the USA Map.   I'd love to get this done and put it upstairs in my themed "vacation room". And what does it mean for knitting?  I had chemo hats down but since those are all finished I modified my list to make knitted knockers.  How appropriate for breast cancer awareness month! This challenge has been good and I have been to focus on things in my stash.   Speaking of stash, Sherri from A Quilting Life blog had a great tutorial on a patchwork bag .  I had some mini charm packs that I have been trying to figure out what to do with and this was the perfect project. Sew the squares together add some batting

My sewing space

About a year ago I blogged about our move to a new home and I showed some pictures of my sewing space.  A year later and that sewing space has seen lots of activities.  Bernina's blog weallsew.com celebrated National Sewing month by offering a contest to win some prizes by entering a post on your sewing space. I decided to participate.  So I am sharing my post: Last year my hubby wanted to move to a new house.  I had just finished organizing my sewing room, had bought shelving specifically for my fabric and I had to dismantle the whole thing. Our new home had a walk out basement room that the previous owners had used for a workout room.  We really don’t work out nor did we want to spend the money buying equipment for a work out room.  My husband decided that he would it turn into a sewing room for me. This room is big, about 35ftx16ft, it runs the length of the house.   It is about 3 times the size of my previous sewing room! The first picture that you see is the v
