What happened to November?

Wow so much has happened this month!   Where do I start? Well first of all the Royals won the World Series! During the final game I got my knitting out to ease my nerves.  At the 7th inning this happened....so I started another hat! It was a marvelous series !   And then there was a parade like no other!    We did not go... look at all of those people!!  Imagine trying to find a bathroom... nope watching from afar was good enough for me! I extended my cancer hat knitting to November.  I ended up with 7 hats, 3 went to a good friend, 2 others went to friends who wanted them for their friends and another went to a breast cancer survivor.  I have 2 left that I will donate.  This was so much fun and I was so happy to help others out. I am averaging about 2 baby quilts a month so that has kept me busy.  This month there were a few more than usual..   I made this for one of my good friend's daughter who is also a good friend of daughter #1.  Isn&

End of the month frenzy

It's almost the end of the month and I am making a mad dash to get the last of my Chemo hats done.  I got this cute thing done the other night: Doesn't Viola look fabulous?  This is a great quick knit and the pattern is from Craftsy .  I did re-do the bill and used double strands, making the bill just a little bit more sturdy.   A friend gave me some yarn thinking I could make something out of it.  I am sure I am not the only knitter with good friends like this!   It only takes one ball of bulky yarn and in the stash from my friend there were 3 balls of bulky yarn that works perfectly for this pattern.  It might be stretch to get two more done by tomorrow (Oct. 31st) but there are at least two more World Series games so just maybe.... Daughter #3 also wanted to a Halloween costume.  Did I mention that she is 20?  In case you don't know, college students really love to dress up for Halloween!  She wants to be Wednesday Adams.  It was pretty easy, she gets a dress f

#Knit4cure

So this month I challenged myself and my knitting friends to knit hats for their local chemo centers.  I have finished four hats so far.  Two of them are with a good friend who has breast cancer and is going through chemo.  I can not even begin to imagine the path that she is walking but I am just happy to help make that journey just a little bit better....even if it is just a hat. Here is my latest.  It took a little more time but I just fell in love with the pattern: This pattern can be found on Ravelry and is a free download.  The yarn suggested in the pattern is no longer available but Cascade Fixation is great substitute! Of course I have to thank my favorite salon, Gaia Salonspa and my good friend Mary for loaning me "Wendy".  She has been a great model for all of the hats! I've got one more hat on my knitting needles and I hope to get it done before the end of the month.  With the Royals in the World Series, I am definitely getting lots of knitting

Elephant and Chevron Nursery Basket Set

I have been busy making nursery accessories for a very dear friend's daughter.  The daughter who happens to be a good friend of my daughter #1 asked if I would make some fabric hampers and basket for their new baby.  I of course said yes, thinking it would be lots of fun and super easy. Well I always seem to underestimate projects, supplies and etc.  She asked for 2 fabric hampers and 4 fabric baskets, all to fit an older entertainment center that they were converting for their nursery.  They had grey and mint picked out for nursery colors.  After a few emails back and forth we came up with some grey and mint chevron fabric and some elephant fabric from Premier Prints. The first laundry hamper took me 3 nights, the second one only one evening.  Once I got things figured out the process was much smoother! For the fabric baskets I used a pattern from Noodlehead .  I love this divided basket pattern.  Not only is there a divider on the inside, but there is also an outside p

Road Trip and Knitting

Hubby and I took a road trip earlier this month.  He had a meeting in Charlotte NC.  I decided to tag along and we made a stop to see my parents.  If you know me then you know that when I travel my knitting is something that I ALWAYS pack and never leave behind.  You also know that I have the motto "one can never carry too much yarn!"  So after I loaded up the car, with an entire large Vera Bradley tote full of yarn and supplies, we were off! En route to my parents we pass by Paducah, Ky home to Hancock Fabrics of Paducah .  Great store with tons of fabrics, I could spend hours in there.  However on this trip it was closing in 15 minutes.  So all I got was a walk through... bummer.  It was a short visit at my parents but a good time was had by all! Hubby and I take turns driving after every 2 hours... most of the time that is fine.  However I got the Atlanta shift.  Lots of rain, lots of lanes and lots of trucks.  Not sure who was more nervous.. me or hubby!

It's October!

It's October, where have this month gone!!   It's been crazy busy for me.   I'll catch everyone up but for now I am going to blog about my Facebook and Instagram post.  So I meant to post this earlier this month: To all of my knitting friends, Today starts Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We all know someone who is fighting and has fought the battle of this awful disease. I challenge all of you to pick up your knitting needles this month and make a hat (or two) for these strong women. Your hats can be donated to your local cancer center. If you need a pattern contact me. I'd love to see pictures of your creations! As for me, I'll be knitting hats all month! ‪#‎ knit4cure‬    So that was the second hat that I started and it turned out like this:    I just finished the second hat last week: This pattern has been a favorite and one that some of my friends who have had chemo really like wearing.  The pattern is from Ravelry and was design

New Baby Quilt... Have you been to the ZOO?

I can't believe it's been 3 weeks since my last post!!  I have been busy making baby quilts.  Daughter #1 has some friends that are having babies and she asked that I make a few for her.  The first one is another version of my farm animal quilt: I think this is my most favorite version so far, mainly because of the fabric that I found for the back: I've been thinking that a nice addition to my baby quilts would be a zoo themed one.  And since Daughter #1 has a good friend that is using zoo animals as her theme for her baby room, it was perfect timing.   So I started out with these drawings back in August: And it became this: And using the same striping idea: How fun is that?   I plan to add this one to my Etsy Store as well.  It turned out so much better than I had dreamed.

My love affair with M6102

My love affair with M6102 continues: My most recent version is this double sided knit that I found at Joann's: I used the stripes for the dress and the polka dot side for the neck binding which I thought added some nice contrast: The back side has a deeper cut which I copied from a dress that I purchased from Land's End.  I just loved how it looked and on a hot day that deeper cut in the back sure can make a difference!  I think I need to add a shoulder bra strap holder to keep the shoulders from slipping. You can see how I finished the neck with a more traditional binding.  I just like the look and feel of this method so much better. My serger wasn't working too well the day I did this but I just didn't want to take the time to work on the tension.  I just wanted to get this dress done! I have one more piece that I want to make using this pattern and then I might be done until next spring! Fall is just around the corner so I am trying to t

Road Trip

Daughter #2 has just recently re-discovered a love for sewing.  Well maybe not a love for sewing but has re-discovered sewing.  She sewed for years as a 4-Her as did Daughter #1, Daughter #2 and for a very short period "Only Son".  They even won more than blue ribbons!  I don't know if they "loved"  sewing back then... but they certainly turned out some wonderful stuff. Anyways  Daughter #2 has been doing quite a bit of fashion sewing lately.  She accompanied me on a road trip to Lawrence where I told her I needed to stop at "Sarah's Fabrics" (local fabric store) before we joined my sister and nephew for an Arts and Crafts fair.  To say that Sarah's has fabrics is an understatement.  When you walk in you are immediately surrounded by bolts of fabrics of all kinds and all labels... Michael Miller, Amy Butler, you name they have it!   But if you go to the back of the store she has a treasure of beautiful fashion fabric!!  We were a little ov

Saturday sewing

Today I am trying to finish up a custom quilt.  I had posted about it earlier.  I just had to finish putting the binding on. I don't hand sew my binding.  Instead I like to use the buttonhole stitch on my sewing machine (#329)...note the settings: It works really well for me: It also helps when your binding cooperates and the stitching just disappears.  It's finished and ready to send of to it's new owner. I hope it brings them much joy! This guy has been my companion this morning: Here's a great tutorial on machine binding using the buttonhole stitch: http://www.leahday.com/art-bindingbymachine/ I hope your Saturday is full of creativity!!
