It's been awhile

Well it's been a little while... over 2 years to be exact.  Lots have happened in 2 years. Where to start?

Well first of all the title of this blog has changed, I think it reflects my direction a little better.  You can read about me more in my profile but for now I think I'll just share what I have been up to.  I have been sewing and it is a wonderful feeling!  I have been reading blogs from others over the years but somehow I haven't had the chance to really sew for me.  I decided that I would change that this summer.  My Thursday Sewing Camp has been an inspiration to get me going.  I meet with 3 lovely ladies every week and we sew or knit or chat and we inspire each other.  My goal was to have a new outfit started and finished for the next week's meeting.  After 5 weeks, I got 5 outfits done!

So for the first time I am doing my very own "I made this outfit" week.  Mimi has been a great help and so far she has steered me in the right direction.   Since this is Tuesday and this is my first blog entry in quite awhile, I'll just stick to Monday's outfit.

This was inspired by McCall's Palmer/Pletsch 6355.  The pattern has been discussed on various blogs and got some wonderful reviews.  It has also been in my stach for quite awhile.

This was my second attempt at this pattern and it worked out much better.  I'll blog about the frist attempt later this week when I actually wear that dress.  Just trust me when I say that this went much better!  This fabric was given to me by a good friend who had  a stash of fabric "donated" to her and since she doesn't sew...I got to go through the stash.  I am sure you all have had the same thing happen to you.  Anyways when she asked me to go through and pick out what I wanted this spoke to me:

It reminded me of something Polo or Ralph would use.  It is a woven fabric.. more linen than cotton but it is little thin so I knew I had to line it.  Our Joann's doesn't have the best selection of lining (I'll rant about that another day) and I was too impatient to order something.  So off I went into the quilting section at Joann's and found a nice lightweight cotton that I thought would work.  Polyester lining in the Kansas heat just was not an option!! I would of preferred to use batiste but of course that was not to be found anywhere. Add an invisible zipper and I was good to go!

McCalls inpsiration on the left , my version on the right.

I loved how the bias finish on the neck and armholes turned out.  This pattern is great and showed you various ways to finish the neck and armholes.  I chose the third option for this and liked it so much better!  I made the lining and dress as two separate pieces and then combined them as one when I finished the neck and armholes.  I've been working on a more "professional" finish for my zippers when I have lining and I think I got that figured out for this dress.  Unfortunately I don't have a picture so I guess I'll have to save it for another post.  This dress agrees with Mimi and we thought it turned out pretty well!

Book Shelf Retirement Quilt

Another woman is retiring from the library.  Mary has been a large part of the library quilting group and has been involved in so many retirement quilts for others.  So many of the original library quilting group have retired and she was basically one of the last ones left.  Three of us from the library along with three others who work on campus or are retired librarians decided to work on a quilt for her.  And now that it is her turn and we wanted to make her something really nice.We know she wanted a book shelf quilt and we used this pattern to make her one: Everyone used the same background fabric and we used our stash to make the bookends.  When I put them together, the scrappiness of all the bookends gave the quilt such a wonderful look.  The sashing in between the blocks was used to have colleagues sign and leave messages of farewell and good luck for Mary.  I made three of the blocks for this quilt.  The first block in on the second row and has a the purple books and the

Another Quilt Retreat

It's been a busy March so far and it all started with a Spring Quilt Retreat with my favorite "Crazy Eights"! We tried a different venue for our quilt retreat and I would say we hit a home run with Sew Cozy Quilt Lodge .  The place sleeps 10 with five bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths.  Each "themed" bedroom has a twin bed...and I say "themed" because the decor in each bedroom is just cute as can be.  The best part about the place is the quilt/sewing room!  Each person has 2 two tables and a design wall!! We had seven of our members present for this retreat and there was so much beauty being created! The "LOVE" squares were my work.  For the first day I decided I would tackle a UFO which really wasn't a quilting project.  I had an old rocking chair that needed a new slipcover.  I have had the fabric for several months.  I didn't have much motivation to work on the slipcover.  I order to go on the retreat I told myself I had to work on

It's the weekend!

It's the weekend and my head is just spinning with all the things that I want to get done! Do I work on the first block of Leah Day's Machine  Quilting Block Party?                                                                             Do I keep the same color combinations or do I make it scrappy and try to use scraps from my stash? Or do I just buy a bunch of the same fabric and make all the blocks the same?  So many choices and so many decisions!!     I also have 2 orders on my Etsy site which need to get started.  My goal for the store this year was to try to get at list one quilt order a month and so far I am there.  The next one will look just like the last one I did but she does not want buttons used for the eyes and nostrils: I also want to work on my Style Arc Estelle Jacket. I bought these ponte knit from Joann's.  I made both colors for my oldest daughter and they just fit the pattern style so well.  I went back and bought more ya
